In 2016, CH2M saw many successes and accomplishments with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), a key client, and with one of the most diverse portfolios of any government agency. Here are a few highlights:
Hanford Hanford Plateau Remediation
The 10-year, $5.7-billion project in Richland, Washington, focuses on removing hazards away from the Columbia River and reducing the 586-square-mile site to an active cleanup area of 75 square miles. Our 2016 accomplishments include:
- Most contaminated glove box removed from the Plutonium Finishing Plant.
- Implemented the use of a new groundwater treatment resin projected to save the project $3 million annually.
- River Corridor Closure work scope successfully transferred to CH2M Plateau Remediation Company (CHPRC).
- CHPRC received OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program Star of Excellence Award for second consecutive year.
- Made history with the start of the Plutonium Finishing Plant demolition.
West Valley Demonstration Project
Awarded to a CH2M-led team in 2011, the West Valley, New York, project includes decommissioning of the Main Plant Processing Building and Vitrification Facility, relocation and storage of vitrified high-level waste, management of the site’s underground tank farm, environmental remediation, and operation and maintenance of site facilities and infrastructure. Our 2016 accomplishments include:
- Reached 2.18 million safe work hours
- Completed vertical storage cask construction
- Successfully relocated all high-level waste to onsite storage
East Tennessee Technology Park
At Oak Ridge, Tennessee, CH2M has now successfully completed, the demolition of the three former uranium enrichment processing buildings. In addition are environmental management operations and landfill management at the Y-12 National Security Complex and other critical services such as waste-treatment operations. Our 2016 accomplishments include:
- K-27 demolition completed, marking the first time in history that an entire gaseous diffusion plant 5 has been deactivated and demolished.
- Celebrated 5 years of successful cleanup progress.
Savannah River
Since 2009, CH2M has been responsible for the operational tank closure of noncompliant radioactive liquid waste tanks at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina. In 2016, we successfully closed the radioactive liquid waste Tank 12 1 month ahead of schedule and $150,000 under budget.
Idaho Cleanup Project
Awarded in 2016, as a subcontractor to Fluor, CH2M is working toward the DOE’s mission to reduce the Idaho Site footprint. The contract includes waste retrieval and packaging, stabilizing and dispositioning spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste, closing the INTEC tank farm, maintaining CERCLA remedies, and operating the INTEC and RWMC until remediated. In 2016, we successfully transitioned the project to a new contractor, recognized as one of the more seamless transitions around the complex to date.
