First the American Council of Engineering Companies-Utah named Jim Schwing/SLC Engineer of the Year, and then the Utah Engineers’ Council (UEC) chose Jim as its Engineer of the Year. These honors recognize Jim’s outstanding work on water infrastructure projects in Utah and his ability to balance responsibilities of service to co-workers, his profession, and his community.
The UEC award highlights Jim’s commitment to advancing the science of engineering, promoting research and studies in engineering areas, and promoting cooperation among the branches of engineering and science in Utah.
During his 44-year- long career with the firm, Jim has worked in Corvallis, Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Pittsburgh. He also worked in Alexandria, Egypt, on CH2M HILL’s first major overseas project, updating the wastewater master plan. Until recently, Jim was area manager of the Salt Lake office, a role he held for10 years.
Although edging toward retirement, Jim is still involved with lots of service work for community groups, professional societies, even the CH2M HILL Alumni Website Committee. Besides his engineering work, Jim has been and continues to be heavily involved in community outreach activities. As part of his activities in the Rotary Club of Salt Lake, he tutors a student weekly in math, he leads the Youth and Child Crisis Committee, and he led the Sub-for-Santa Program. He is currently a candidate to serve on the Salt Lake City Housing Advisory and Appeals Board, Board Member of ACEC-Utah and Past-President, and Conference Committee Chairman for the Water Environment Association of Utah. He is a life- member of both the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the Water Environment Federation (WEF).
Congratulations, Jim! We are honored to work with you and have you represent the CH2M HILL family.
