Dean’s professional service outside CH2M HILL includes work with the Utah Construction & Mining Company, Engineering Science, Inc., James M. Montgomery Engineers, Inc., the City of Salem, and the Director of Public Works for the City of Hoquiam, Washington.

Dean was also active in his community, holding major offices in a wide range of activities including the Chemeketa Community College; Linn-Benton Community College; Crescent Valley High School; Elected Director to Skyline West Sub-Division Wastewater District Chair; Little League Baseball Program; Youth Football Program; and Women’s Christian Temperance Union Children’s Farm Home. He also was active in Phi Delta Theta Fraternity; Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks; The International Association of Lions Clubs; Kiwanis International; Fraternal Order of Eagles; Hoquiam Masonry, Inc.; and Grays Harbor Lodge Number 52. Other interests include Free & Accepted Masons; Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., USA; York Rite of Freemasonry; Royal Order of Scotland; Ancient Arabic Order of the Mystic Shrine, Afifi Shrine Center; Grays Harbor Shrine Club; Royal Order of Jesters; Order of Quetzalcoatl; and the Pacific Northwest Quetzalcoatl Association.

At the University of Washington, Dean was an outstanding athlete lettering in football, track, and basketball including serving as Captain of the basketball team. Other honors included All Pacific Coast Basketball (1955); University of Washington, Sports Hall of Fame (1980), and University of Washington School of Civil Engineering, Most Outstanding Intercollegiate Athlete in the Last 100 years (1898-1998); and the University of Washington Fir Tree in recognition of leadership and service to the University (1955).
